Invited Faculty - Medhat Askar

Medhat Askar, MD, PhD, is the Director of Allogen Laboratories and a Staff Physician in the Transplant Centre of the Digestive Diseases Institute. He is also Associate Professor in the Department of Surgery at the Cleveland Clinic Lerner College of Medicine of Case Western Reserve University.

He is board-certified by the American Board of Histocompatibility and Immunogenetics, the American Board of Medical Laboratory Immunology, and the American Board of Bio-analysis in Diagnostic Immunology. His clinical interests include immunology, immunogenetics and transplantation.

Prof. Askar's clinical responsibilities as the Director of Allogen Laboratories in Cleveland, Ohio and Charleston, West Virginia include overseeing clinical testing performed for solid organ and stem cell transplant candidates, recipients and donors.
While his primary clinical responsibility is in the area of laboratory supervision, he also provides clinical research support for the transplant services and participates in resident and fellowship educational activities.
Medhat is very active in several roles in the Cleveland Clinic Lerner College of Medicine; including serving as a PBL Facilitator and a faculty member of the first year medical student curriculum in Immunology.  He also serves as a member of the CCLCM Admissions Committee and has been the research preceptor for numerous medical students, residents and fellows.

Prof. Askar is a member of many committees within national and international professional organizations including the Education Committee of the Transplantation Society and the Quality and Standards Committee of the American Society for Histocompatibility and Immunogenetics (ASHI). He is a Commissioner of the ASHI Accreditation Review Board and the Vice Chair of the Diplomat Exam Committee of The American Board of Histocompatibility and Immunogenetics. He has authored and co-authored manuscripts in peer reviewed medical journals, a book Chapter, and serves as a reviewer for many high impact transplant journals including the American Journal of Transplantation, The Biology of Blood and Marrow Transplantation, Human Immunology, Transplant Infectious Diseases, and Transplant International.
