Invited Faculty -Abraham Shaked

Dr. Shaked is the Director of the Penn Transplant Institute, and Chief of the Division of Transplantation at the University of Pennsylvania. The transplant program at University of Pennsylvania is one of the largest transplant centres in the USA performing over 450 thoracic and abdominal solid organ transplantation every year, including 140 cadaveric and living donor liver transplantation done in children and adults.
Dr. Shaked is involved in the development of national policy in the field of organ transplantation in the USA. He served as the President of the American Society of Transplant Surgeons, a professional association which determines standards for the practice of transplantation in the United States. He served on many national committees on transplantation including NIH steering committees, and was a member of the board of Director of UNOS (United Network for Organ Sharing). In this capacity he was asked to advice members of the congress on issues relevant to the field of transplantation, and testified on this subject in congressional hearings.
Dr. Shaked's academic record is reflected by his achievements in basic laboratory research and support for clinical science investigation. His research efforts are at the area of translational science, were he is focused on monitoring the interrelations between inflammatory and immune response and the development of tolerance. He is supported by continuous NIH funding for the last 20 years. He has published over 200 manuscripts, is a member of the editorial boards of American Journal of Transplantation, Transplantation, and Liver Transplantation.
